Scam Alert from Davison County Sheriff Dept.

The Davison County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the community of a new e-mail/telephone scam in the county.  Scam artists are targeting people advertising dogs for sale. Two dog breeders in the county received the most recent calls.

The scam artists contact the sellers via the system used to contact people with hearing disabilities. An e-mail       address is obtained following the initial call. Arrangements are made to have the dog health certified for shipping to another state.  The scammer claims they will send a certified check overnight   UPS to cover the purchase of the dog and other seller expenses.

The check is written for several hundred dollars above the agreed amount.  The scammer instructs the seller to    deposit the check, take out the agreed expense, and the return the remainder via Western Union. However, the   certified check is actually bogus and the seller is responsible for the money returned to the scammer.  No actual   sale of a dog happens.

So far, both sellers in Davison County contacted by the scammers checked out the scheme before sending any money.

This is one of many telephone and e-mail scams being attempted in the community. The Davison County Sheriff’s Office advises all sellers to be cautious so as not to become victims of the scam.  Check all sale requests where you have no personal contact with the buyer.

If you have any questions or think you may have been scammed, contact the Davison County Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency immediately.
